Dale Burlison DeArmond (July 2, 1914 – November 21, 2006) was an American printmaker and book illustrator. Born in Bismarck, North Dakota, Dale moved to Alaska after marrying R.N. DeArmond, originally from Sitka, in 1935. After living in Sitka, Pelican, and Ketchikan the DeArmond’s moved to Juneau in 1953. Dale worked for the Alaska Territorial Library, then for the Juneau City Library where she was director from 1958 to 1979. Her early work included woodcarving and painting, but following a 1960 course with Danny Pierce, she took up woodcut printmaking as her primary medium. Much of her work can be found in books that she has written and illustrated. Her first book, Juneau, a book of woodcuts, won the Pacific Northwest Booksellers Award for the best illustrated book in 1973. Other books include Berry Woman’s Children, The Sea Oil Lamp, and the limited edition Raven, A Collection of Woodcuts. Her life and Alaskan experience spanning her artistic career of some 60 years was creative inspiration for her work.
