The Juneau halibut fleet this year is larger than ever before and number about 35 vessels, according to Dan Twiet, president of the Fishing Vessel Owners Association. Among the newer and larger vessels of the fleet are the sister ships Janette, under Merle Rhoades, and Cross Sound, owned by Russell Doloff and skippered by Sivert Anderson. Largest vessel of the local fleet is still the 10-man schooner Explorer, Captain Magnus Hansen. The Oceanic, Captain Ole Westby, has been rebuilt, and Francis Hyde’s Aegir has a new electronic sounding device. A new addition to the fleet is the Sunmore, under Johnny Winther. Vincent Anderson recently rebuilt the Sentinel, and the Queen is a fine, large craft under Olaf Westby. Oldtimers in the fleet include the Fern, John Lowell; Arden, Olaf Larson; Norland, Tom Sandwick; Margaret T., Peter Hildre; Gordon D., Dan Stanworth, Avona, Martin Brandahl and Valient, Dan Twiet.
